IN A renewed push to boost agricultural productivity and promote food security, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has distributed 900 confiscated water pumping machines to farmers across nine regions of Ghana.
The pumps, which were originally seized from illegal small-scale miners — popularly known as “galamsey” operators, are now being repurposed to support irrigation and enhance food production.
The distribution forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to improve access to irrigation for smallholder farmers, especially during the dry season, and to ensure that seized assets contribute positively to national development.

According to the Minister, the initiative is a practical example of transforming environmental destruction into a tool for progress.
