THE MINISTRY of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), through its Department of Gender, has held a one-day sensitisation workshop on the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121) to deepen stakeholder understanding and promote its effective implementation.
The workshop, supported by UNFPA Ghana, took place over the week, with participants drawn from government institutions, civil society, academia, and traditional authorities.
In her welcome remarks, Madam Faustina Acheampong, Director of the Department of Gender, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment through full enforcement of the Act.

She noted that the session aimed to clarify the roles and responsibilities of key actors and develop practical strategies for implementation.
Passed by Parliament on 30th July 2024, the Affirmative Action Act seeks to progressively increase women’s participation in decision-making, targeting 30% representation between 2024 and 2026, 35% by 2028, and 50% by 2034.
Madam Acheampong disclosed that the Ministry officially unveiled the Act on 31st July 2025 as part of African Women’s Day celebrations. A Gender Equity Committee has since been constituted to oversee the enforcement process.

She emphasised that successful implementation required collaboration between government, development partners, MMDAs, civil society organisations, traditional leaders, researchers, and the media.
Participants engaged in plenary and group sessions to develop action plans and share insights on effective monitoring of the law.

In closing, the Director thanked UNFPA for its continuous support and commended stakeholders for their dedication to advancing gender equity in Ghana.
