
GHANA has achieved a significant milestone in continental health leadership with the appointment of Dr. Delese Mimi Darko as the inaugural Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).
The announcement was made during the 2nd Ordinary Session of the Conference of State Parties in Kigali, Rwanda.

Dr. Darko, a seasoned pharmacist and regulatory expert, emerged as the top candidate from a competitive pool of 149 applicants. Her extensive experience includes serving as the first female Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), where she led initiatives to enhance medicine safety and regulatory standards.
Under her leadership, Ghana became a member of the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring and established a National Centre for Pharmacovigilance.

The AMA, headquartered in Kigali, is a specialized agency of the African Union tasked with harmonizing medical product regulations across the continent. Its mission is to improve access to quality, safe, and effective medical products, thereby strengthening public health systems throughout Africa.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, congratulated Dr. Darko on her appointment, highlighting her exemplary service and the successful campaign led by Team Ghana. He also acknowledged President Mahama’s support and leadership in achieving this milestone.

As Dr. Delese Mimi Darko prepares to assume her role in Kigali, her appointment is seen as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to advancing healthcare standards and regulatory excellence across Africa.
