
GHANAIAN PRIDE soared at the recent United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial in Germany as Major General Anita Asmah was lauded for her groundbreaking appointment as the first African woman to serve as a UN Force Commander.

Following his address, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa highlighted Major General Asmah’s achievement, prompting a thunderous applause from the international assembly.
Appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in December 2024, Major General Asmah now leads the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Syria, marking a significant milestone in UN peacekeeping history.


With over 31 years of service in the Ghana Armed Forces and extensive experience in UN missions, including roles in Lebanon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, she brings a wealth of expertise to her new position.
Major General Asmah’s appointment has been celebrated as a testament to the competence and capabilities of Ghanaian women on the global stage. Her leadership not only enhances Ghana’s reputation in international peacekeeping but also serves as an inspiration for women across Africa aspiring to leadership roles in the military and beyond.
