IN A SIGNIFICANT move aimed at improving morale and operational efficiency within the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Minister of Education, Hon. Lawyer Haruna Iddrissu, has announced the mass promotion of all legitimate Deputy Directors of Education across the country.

The Minister, speaking during the national launch of the “Free Sanitary Pad for Girls in School” initiative, stated that the promotion was long overdue. He revealed that the directive to elevate the qualified deputy directors came directly from President John Dramani Mahama as part of the government’s commitment to fulfill campaign promises and bring lasting reforms to the education sector.

“The President directed the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that all eligible deputy directors are promoted. This will grant them peace of mind and encourage productivity,” the Minister emphasized.

During the event, which was also attended by President Mahama, Hon. Iddrissu, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, proposed the establishment of a Technical and Vocational Education Trust Fund (T-VET).

He appealed to the President to allocate a portion of Ghana’s oil revenue to support the fund, emphasizing its importance in advancing vocational training in the country.

The Education Minister also highlighted several ongoing and future plans aimed at enhancing the quality of education nationwide.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to quality basic education and reiterated plans to continue the implementation of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy. A review report from the National Education Forum is expected soon to guide the next phase of the FSHS policy.

As part of the government’s broader vision for equitable access to tertiary education, Hon. Iddrissu disclosed that a comprehensive plan is underway to ensure each region in Ghana hosts a fully-fledged university.

He noted that Bonsu University in the Eastern Region will have satellite campuses in Ohawu (Volta Region), Kenyasi (Western North Region), and Akyrensoa. This strategic expansion is aimed at creating regional centers of academic excellence.

Additionally, he revealed that the Veterinary College in Kpong-Tamale would be integrated into the University for Development Studies (UDS) as a new department, further strengthening the university’s academic offerings and regional presence.

The announcements mark a major step in the government’s efforts to decentralize higher education and improve educational infrastructure and access across the country.
