IN A SIGNIFICANT shake-up within Ghana’s judicial system, Acting Chief Justice Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has ordered that all newly filed cases and applications must be reviewed by his office before being assigned to any court.

The directive, issued in a memo dated April 23, 2025, and signed by Deputy Judicial Secretary Dr. Cyracus B. Bapuuroh, affects the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the High Courts across the country.
Registrars are now required to forward every new matter to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for approval prior to assigning it to a court or setting a hearing date. This includes situations involving multiple courts or the empanelling of judges.
“This directive supersedes all previous directives until further notice,” the memo emphasized, underscoring the Acting Chief Justice’s authoritative role in judicial case management during this transitional period.

The move comes in the wake of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, placing Justice Baffoe-Bonnie at the helm of the Judiciary’s administrative machinery. The directive was also copied to his office for attention and enforcement.
Legal observers view the change as a bid to centralize oversight and ensure consistent handling of cases during the current leadership transition.
