THE MAMPRUGU Youth Association (MAYA) has issued a strong call for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), following what it described as an “unprofessional and dangerous” apology extended to the Kusasi youth accused of attacking state installations and killing police officers in the embattled Bawku area.

At a fiery press conference held this morning, the group condemned the IGP’s recent visit to Bawku, during which he reportedly offered an apology to Kusasi leaders without engaging the Mamprusi faction.
According to MAYA, this act emboldened the Kusasi youth, leading to more deadly attacks, including the killing of two police officers in Binduri just days after the IGP’s visit.

“The IGP’s apology severely erodes the confidence of the men in uniform and is akin to rewarding lawlessness and banditry,” the statement read. “He must step aside to cleanse the image of the service he has so soiled.”

The group lamented the growing insecurity in Bawku, pointing to violent attacks on police, installations, roads, markets and even public infrastructure like hospitals and banks, allegedly orchestrated by Kusasi youth. They accused the IGP of abandoning the security personnel on the ground and demanded the urgent resumption of armed escorts along critical trade routes.
Calling on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the enforcement of the law, MAYA also commended his recent statement denouncing the destruction of state property in the area as “criminal vandalism.”

The group urged all stakeholders, particularly Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the mediator in the Bawku conflict, to note the alleged repeated acts of provocation and bad faith by the Kusasi faction, warning that the patience of Mamprugu youth is wearing thin.
