THE GREATER Accra Regional Women’s Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has joined the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2025, reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women across the region.
In a statement issued by the Regional Women’s Organiser, Mrs. Felicia Mekpoi Bortey, the NDC women’s leadership recognized the significant progress made by Ghanaian women in political, social and economic spheres while calling for continued efforts to dismantle barriers that hinder full gender equality.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.”, underscores the urgent need to ensure that no woman or girl is left behind in the pursuit of equal opportunities.
Mrs. Mekpoi Bortey highlighted the invaluable contributions of Ghanaian women to national development, particularly commending female leaders within the NDC, including First Lady Lordina Mahama, Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, and Senior Presidential Advisor Madam Valerie Sawyer. She praised their resilience and leadership, which continue to inspire the next generation of women in politics and beyond.
However, she also pointed out persistent challenges such as unequal pay, limited access to resources, gender-based violence and social discrimination. She urged the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to take decisive action in addressing these issues, emphasizing the need for strategic policies that promote women’s empowerment and inclusion.

“As we celebrate the courage, resilience and success of women across the globe, we must also recognize that true equality is not just about celebrating achievements but about breaking down the systemic barriers that hold women back,” Mrs. Bortey stated.
Felicia Mekpoi Bortey called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations and political parties, to work collectively toward a future where women and girls have equal rights, opportunities, and protection under the law.

The NDC Greater Accra Women’s Wing reaffirmed its dedication to championing policies that uplift women, ensuring that gender equality becomes a lived reality rather than an aspirational goal.
Happy International Women’s Day 2025!
