GHANA’S gold sector has generated more than US$13 billion in 2026, already surpassing the US$10.8 billion recorded in 2025, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, has disclosed.

He said the latest figure was particularly significant because the year had not yet come to an end, describing the development as evidence of the growing contribution of the gold sector to Ghana’s economy and foreign exchange position.
Lawyer Gyamfi made the disclosure at the Accra edition of the Loveworld Trade and Investment Forum (LTIF), held under the theme: “Build The Future Through Production, Trade, Trust and Innovation.”
According to him, the transformation of Ghana’s gold trading sector under the GoldBod initiative had enabled the country to exercise greater control over the management and commercialization of its natural resources.

He said, the new system had brought an end to what he described as a culture in which some individuals purchased gold without sufficient regard for how it was mined, while others exported gold through informal channels or smuggled it out of the country.
“We have brought to an end that culture where a few selfish individuals were buying our gold without caring how it was mined, not exporting through formal channels, smuggling gold outside the country, thereby depriving the nation of much-needed revenue and foreign exchange,” he said.

Lawyer Gyamfi said, the formalization of the gold trading sector and stronger compliance with the Ghana Gold Board Act had helped position gold as a major contributor to Ghana’s foreign exchange stability and economic growth.
He explained that, the government’s efforts were aimed not only at increasing gold revenues but also at ensuring that the country derived maximum economic value from its natural resources.

The GoldBod CEO further encouraged young people to take advantage of opportunities emerging from the formalized gold trading sector, saying the government had created avenues for them to participate in the industry without necessarily having to raise large amounts of capital.
He urged participants at the forum, convened by Loveworld Commerce Minister Madam Stephanie Oforka at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), to explore opportunities within the formal gold sector.
