THE DEPUTY National Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) deliberately used propaganda and misinformation to overshadow the achievements of the John Mahama administration between 2010 and 2016.

Speaking during the NDC’s “Set the Records Straight” series over the week in Accra, Ako Gunn said the Mahama-led NDC government delivered transformational projects in infrastructure, education and the economy, but those achievements were buried under a sustained campaign of false narratives by the NPP prior to 2016 elections.

According to him, Ghanaians must not again allow propaganda to erase the “visible and measurable progress” recorded under the NDC government this time around.

Ako Gunn stated that under the NDC administration, Ghana attained lower middle-income status in 2010, while the economy recorded an average GDP growth rate of more than seven percent between 2010 and 2013.

He said the government also undertook massive infrastructure expansion across the country, including the construction and rehabilitation of more than 3,000 kilometres of roads.

Among the flagship projects, he highlighted the construction of the Circle Interchange in Accra, popularly referred to as “Circle Dubai” because of its modern design and scale.

In the education sector, Ako Gunn noted that the NDC built more than 200 Community Day Schools known as E-block Senior High Schools to improve access to secondary education and reduce congestion in classrooms.

He further highlighted major transport infrastructure projects, including Terminal 3 at the Kotoka International Airport and the expansion of the Kumasi Airport, as clear evidence of the NDC’s commitment to national development. Despite these achievements, Ako Gunn said the NDC’s record was drowned in persistent propaganda and misinformation.

He referenced issues such as “Dumsor,” the Amina Mohammed controversy, UTONG, the bus branding saga and the “flights” allegations as narratives that were repeatedly circulated to shape public opinion against the Mahama government.

According to him, former President John Dramani Mahama chose to focus on governance rather than engage in aggressive political attacks to defend his administration.

“President Mahama focused more on governance and less on political propaganda, and that gave the opposition the opportunity to control the narrative,” Ako Gunn stated.

NDC National DEPUTY Communication Officer said the same political strategy is being repeated today because the NPP has little to show in terms of policy and governance achievements.

He said false claims surrounding Gold Board procurement, COCOBOD operations and reports that public funds were used to purchase four aircraft for the president were all part of attempts to mislead the public. He described the aircraft reports as “false, misleading and irresponsible,” adding that efforts were also being made to turn cocoa farmers against COCOBOD.

Ako Gunn maintained that the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 general elections was not a reflection of poor performance but the result of sustained propaganda that distorted public perception of the government’s achievements.

He urged Ghanaians to focus on facts and development records instead of misinformation by the gone NPP aimed at rewriting history.
