THE GREATER Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the assault of JoyNews journalist, Mr. Latif Iddrisu, during a politically charged protest over the arrest of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularity known as ‘Chairman Wontumi’ last month.

The incident occurred on May 27, 2025, when a group of demonstrators – reportedly including members of parliament and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – gathered in front of the EOCO Office in Accra. The protest was in response to the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

While covering the protest, Mr. Iddrisu was allegedly attacked by some of the demonstrators. Following an investigation, police on June 7, 2025, apprehended a 55-year-old suspect, Theophilus Thompson, at James Town. He is currently in custody and cooperating with authorities.

According to the police, efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who participated in the assault.

In a statement, the Accra Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding journalists and ensuring that anyone who commits violence against media personnel or the public is held accountable.

Signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the release urged the public to support investigations and uphold the rights and safety of journalists across the country.
